Player Biography

The evolution of modern white-ball batting in women's cricket is closely tied to the strokeplay of Smriti Mandhana. Operating at the top of the order as an elegant left-handed opener, Mandhana redefined India's Powerplay strategy through her ability to combine high-velocity boundary hitting with precise placement. Her technical foundation relies on late balance, fast hand speed through the line of the ball, and a distinctive lofted drive over the off-side. Rather than relying purely on muscle, her game maximises leverage, timing, and footwork to dictate terms against international pace and spin alike.

Recognised as one of the premier top-order batters in world cricket, Mandhana has collected an impressive array of individual honours across her career. She was twice decorated with the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award as the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2018 and 2021, earned the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2018, and received the Arjuna Award in 2018. Her landmark performances on the international stage include a memorable pink-ball Test century against Australia at Gold Coast in 2021 and a commanding hundred against South Africa in Chennai.

Across her career, Mandhana has continuously rewritten the benchmark records for Indian batters on the world stage. She made history as the first Indian woman to score international centuries in all three formats, while also becoming the first woman in world cricket to cross 1,000 ODI runs in a single calendar year in 2025. Furthermore, she established her place as the fastest Indian woman to reach 2,000 and 3,000 ODI runs, cementing her reputation as an extraordinarily consistent run-scorer across all global conditions.

Her leadership trajectory reached a major milestone in franchise cricket when she was named captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League. Demonstrating tactical maturity under intense pressure, she captained RCB to their inaugural WPL title in 2024, followed by a second championship triumph in 2026. Beyond her franchise successes, she was a vital contributor to India's gold medal campaigns at the Asian Games and her country's historic 2025 World Cup victory, where her aggressive opening partnerships set the tone throughout the tournament.

In October 2026, Mandhana stepped into the ultimate national leadership role, being officially appointed as captain of the Indian national women's cricket team following Harmanpreet Kaur stepping down. Having previously served as the long-time vice-captain and leading the side in interim capacities, her full-time appointment marks the formal beginning of a new leadership era for Indian cricket. As national captain and leading top-order batter, Mandhana continues to shape the tactical identity and global ambitions of the national team.
