We are back for the chase! The umpires are back out in the middle as the players of MI London Women make their way through the smoke. It will be the duo of Bryony Smith and Jess Jonassen to open the innings for Sunrisers Leeds Women. Meanwhile, Alexa Stonehouse will get proceedings underway with the ball. Let's go...
... The Run Chase ...
Under-par score? It was a collective bowling effort by the Sunrisers with Deepti, Baker and captain Gibson chipping in with a couple of wickets and keeping things tight in the second half of the innings. Well, 107 is not a big mountain to climb. But if the MI London Women bowlers can make early inroads with the new ball under those overcast conditions, this contest could get interesting. And with the likes of Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland on the other side, Sunrisers Leeds Women have every reason to fancy their chances of chasing this down without much fuss. Back in a bit with the run chase.
A quick chat - Hayley Matthews says that it was much easier to play with the new ball, but things got a bit challenging when the ball turned soft. About the opening partnership, she says that they were communicating and were understanding each other really well. Regarding the pitch, she says there was uneven bounce in the middle phase of the game, which she and her team would like to make the most of in the second innings.
A bright start turned into a procession - Sunrisers Leeds bowled tight lines and stayed accurate from the start, but they couldn't prise out the openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Hayley Matthews. What stood out early on was the running between the wickets, with both batters proactive and hungry for the ones and twos before eventually opening the throttle. Matthews did get a life, put down by Cross, only for Deepti to eventually dismiss her. And that breakthrough proved the turning point. The moment Matthews fell, the innings caved in for MI London Women, sliding from 71/1 all the way to 107/8, with no one else stepping up to steady the ship.
Orange heavy on Blue - That's a solid comeback from Sunrisers Leeds Women. They have restricted the hosts to quite an under-par total. MI London Women would be pretty disappointed with their batting display, as barring the top three batters, none could get into double figures. And from 68/1 at the halfway stage, they could only add 42/7 in the next fifty balls. The one downside on an otherwise strong Sunrisers showing was the injury to Kate Cross. She had bowled just 10 balls before that shoulder problem forced her off.
OUT! ALICE DAVIDSON-RICHARDS IS RUN OUT! A run out to end the innings. MI London Women finish on 107/8. Sutherland stays full, on off and middle. Alice smears it in front of square on the leg side. With it being the last ball of the innings, the batters commit to the second run. Phoebe Litchfield charges in off the deep mid-wicket fence, picks the ball up and throws it on the bounce at the batting end. The throw is a bit away from the stumps, but Lauren Winfield-Hill gathers it to her left and breaks the stumps with Davidson-Richards well short of the crease.
Loppy slower ball, full and around off. Kira Chathli walks across to swing it away on the leg side but the ball drops on her and she just checks her shot. Plays it in front of long on and cannot come back for the second.
Takes pace off, full and on off. Alice Davidson-Richards knocks it to long on for a single.
Full and on off, drilled back to the bowler.

Nothing has really gone MI's way since Matthews' departure. Alice Davidson-Richards is the new batter. And Annabel Sutherland will bowl the final set of the innings.
OUT! STUMPED! Sharp work by the experienced Lauren Winfield-Hill. Pace off ball by Gibson, on a length, on off. Monaghan pushes at the ball with hard hands away from her body. Ekes out an inside edge that drops behind to the keeper's left. She is not aware of where the ball is, but the keeper, Lauren Winfield-Hill, is alert to the situation. She sticks out her left mitt to gather the ball and whips the bails off to catch Monaghan out of her crease.
Wide not given, much to the surprise of Alice. Pace off, angled down leg. Alice Monaghan walks towards the off side to play the scoop but misses. The umpire feels that had Alice been in her normal standing position, the ball would have hit her on the pads and hence does not signal a wide.
FOUR! Edged away! Gibson hits the hard length, on off. Not all that wide for the cut but Alice Monaghan throws her hands at the ball. Gets an outside edge and it races fine of the short third fielder for a boundary.
Misses out again! Length-delivery, on top of off with a bit of extra bounce. Alice Monaghan stays leg side to play the square cut but the ball bounces over his angled bat.
Back of a length, outside off. Alice hangs back and cuts it away but cannot get it through the gap at cover and point.
? 120 could be a good total though. Danielle Gibson is back on.
100 up for MI London Women! A slower ball, on a length and angling at the pads. Monaghan misses to pull and is hit on her back thigh. They pick up a leg bye as the ball rolls in the off side in front of square.
Never really got going there, did Henry. Cassidy McCarthy is thrilled to take the catch but it looked like she didn't pick it up early. Alice Monaghan is in at number 8.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Cassidy McCarthy just about manages to cling on, and MI London Women suffer a big blow with 11 legal balls left in the innings. It is the back-of-the-hand slower one by Sutherland, fuller and on middle. Henry clears her front leg and has a swipe across the line. A top edge is found and it goes a long way up in the air. McCarthy moves forward to settle herself under the swirling ball. She does not quite manage to get right underneath the ball but extends her hands out in front and gets low to snaffle it. She has a sheepish smile on her face after completing the catch.
Cross-seam ball, not all that short, outside off. Henry flashes and is beaten past the outside edge.
Takes pace off and it is on the shorter side, outside off. Chathli waits on it and cuts it to deep cover for one.
On a good length, outside off. Henry slaps it to deep cover, where the fielder tidies up with a slide to her left. Single taken.
Time for Annabel Sutherland to roll her arm again. She has bowled 10 balls and has conceded just 9 runs, bowling 5 dots so far.
In the air...but safe. A bit of air given by Jonassen, on middle. Henry hangs deep in the crease and uses her bottom to thump it down the ground. Ends up slicing it off the outer half and it lands safely in the wide long off region before Danielle Gibson can get there to her left. Two runs taken.
Slightly shorter, and this keeps coming in with the arm, on middle. Henry punches it back to the bowler.
Full and straight, at the sticks. Chathli eases it to long on and turns the strike over.
Loopy ball, very full, on off. Henry jams it out wide of cover and gets to the other end.
Fractionally short, on off, this is sliced to point.
Over to the men - That's a wrap on the women's season opener. Up next, the men take centre stage as three-time champions and defending title holders, MI London, get their campaign underway against Sunrisers Leeds. The women's contest turned out to be a one-sided affair, and let's hope the men's fixture serves up a much closer battle. The first ball will be bowled at 5.30 pm GMT (11 pm IST). Reflecting on the win - The skipper of Sunrisers Leeds Women, Danielle Gibson starts by saying that the bowlers did a tremendous job in the first innings. Believes that they were top-notch with their lines and lengths and executed their plans really well. On being asked about using the experience in her team, she says that it is good to have so many experienced players who share their insights with fielding setups and everything. Shares that she is blessed to have a team like this. About the performance of Annabel Sutherland, she shares that she was exceptional with the ball and wishes she continues like this. When asked for an injury update on Kate Cross, she says that they will have to wait and see how she progresses.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Phoebe Litchfield has been given the award for her entertaining knock of 43 runs off 26 balls. Litchfield says that it was nice to get out on the field and win the game. Goes on to applaud the way the bowlers set things up, and they were backed in the field well too. Feels that their spinners held their lines and lengths bravely, and they took their catches. On the chase, she says that when it's less than 120-130 at the Oval, regardless of the start, you want to be positive. Ends by saying that they will now head to their home and get a feel for the conditions at Headingley.
From promise to disappointment - After being asked to bat first, it all began promisingly for MI London. Hayley Matthews and Danni Wyatt-Hodge eased any early nerves that usually accompany the opening game of a tournament. The 56-run opening stand was as good as it got for London. Once Matthews departed, the innings fell away. No one managed to build on the foundation as Sunrisers chipped away at the wickets and London had to settle for 107. For Leeds, the fightback began with Deepti Sharma removing Hayley Matthews, and the rest of the attack quickly followed suit to seize control for the team in orange. There was one concern, though, as Kate Cross injured her left shoulder while fielding. The early update from the camp is encouraging, with the injury not believed to be a dislocation.
Smooth sailing for Leeds - Just over a run a ball was all the Sunrisers needed at the start, and it was the usual suspect who broke the back of the chase. Phoebe Litchfield didn't let the run out of Jess Jonassen affect her and showcased her full range of strokes. Her 57-run partnership with fellow Aussie Annabel Sutherland effectively shut down any hopes MI London had of defending their modest total. Sutherland batted through the chase, while Danielle Gibson applied the finishing touches as Leeds cruised home with 31 balls to spare.
Champions off to a winning start - Sunrisers Leeds make the perfect start to their title defence. It is also their fourth straight win over MI London in the women's competition. London will be left ruing their inability to build on a bright start with the bat, and defending 107 was always going to be a tall order.
FOUR! That's it, Danielle Gibson seals the win in style. Sunrisers Leeds defeat MI London by 7 wickets with a staggering 31 balls remaining. Bowled just back of a length but outside off. Gibson goes after the width and powers it between mid off and extra cover for a boundary.

Slows it down, shorter and turning into the pads. Sutherland works it with the spin to deep mid-wicket for a run. 9 more needed for Sunrisers Leeds.
SIX! Excellent use of the feet! Pitches it a touch fuller, on middle. Annabel Sutherland shimmies down the track to get the pitch of the ball and launches it over the long on fence for six runs.
Drops it short, on middle. Gibson swivels and pulls it to deep square leg for a single.
Short, on off, Danielle Gibson punches it but straight to the cover fielder.
WIDE! Hayley Matthews drags her length really back and ends up offering a bouncer, which goes much over Gibson's helmet, outside off. Gibson just drops her stance and gets the bonus run.
Flat and short, on middle. Sutherland punches it to long on for a single.

Tossed up this time, Sutherland comes down the track and drills it on the full to long off for a single. Just 19 more needed off 40 balls.
Quick and short, on off and middle. Sutherland plays the short-arm jab off the back foot and gets it well to the left of deep mid-wicket for another brace.
Oh, a bit of a misfield now. Flatter one around off, Sutherland looks to hit it through the off side but gets an outside edge to the left of short third. Kirstie Gordon lets it through, allowing the batters to pick up two runs.
Kerr keeps the length short, bowling it a bit quicker and outside off. Gibson rocks back and powers it to deep point for just one more.

OUT! TIMBER! Kirstie Gordon has the last laugh in this battle, but it might be too late. Kirstie Gordon bowls it flatter and straight at the stumps. Phoebe Litchfield is a bit indecisive, but she does step out to go for the lofted shot. Litchfield makes a bit of room but ends up getting beaten in flight and misses the shot, as the ball smashes into middle stump. 27 needed now off 46 balls.
FOUR! Make that a hat-trick of boundaries for Phoebe. Dragged down on middle and leg, Litchfield leans across to the off side, gets inside the line and swings it past short fine leg for yet another boundary.
FOUR! Litchfield forces an error out of Gordon and helps herself to another boundary. Phoebe Litchfield shimmies down the track and Gordon ends up bowling a high full toss, which is swung away to the left of deep backward square leg for a boundary.
Is that a no ball? Looked high, and it is being checked by the third umpire. The Ball Tracking shows that the ball dipped below the waist of the batter, and it is a fair delivery.
FOUR! A bit top-edgy but clears the fielder with ease. Flighted up on the pads, Phoebe Litchfield goes down to sweep but gets a top edge over short fine leg and picks up a boundary.
