Welcome back for the second essay. Harmanpreet Kaur has her troops in a huddle for one final word before they take the field. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Chamari Athapaththu and Imesha Dulani to open the innings for Sri Lanka. Kranti Gaud has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Athapaththu is on strike. Let's go...

    ... THE RUN CHASE ...

  • 0.0

A mountain to climb - Sri Lanka have it all to do, but they can take confidence from the way they chased 178 against Pakistan in the semifinal, their highest successful chase in T20I cricket. However, a much tougher challenge awaits them today, both in terms of the target and the quality of the bowling attack they are up against. A lot will rely on how they start, with Chamari Athapaththu needing to lead the charge. Stick around as the chase is coming up shortly.

New day, same impact - It was indeed the case for the Indian opener, who once again came through for her side with a 99-run opening stand. Shafali Verma fell just short of a fifty, but Smriti Mandhana carried on even after bringing up her half-century to keep the momentum going for India. Sri Lanka could not close out the innings well either, as Richa Ghosh put on a finishing masterclass, with 53 runs coming off the last 3 overs.

Power on show - What a finishing kick provided by Richa Ghosh to help India post 216, the highest score in the history of women's cricket at the Asian Games. They have eclipsed the previous best of 202, posted by Hong Kong, China against Mongolia in the previous edition. From start to finish, India dictated the terms, and it would be fair to say they have one hand on the gold medal.

  • 19.9

FOUR! A boundary to end the innings! Just a shade behind the good length, angling in, on off and middle. Richa Ghosh pulls it toward the deep backward square leg fence for four runs. India have posted 216 runs on the board.

  • 19.8

Change of a run out goes begging! Change of pace from Mithali Ayodhya, on the shorter side, outside off. Fulmali misjudges the bounce, missing her pull shot as it carries through to the keeper. Richa spots the opportunity and calls for a quick single. The keeper fails to collect it cleanly and misses the hit at the striker's end. However, there is a chance at the other end as Fulmali is pretty late to arrive, but the bowler fails to grab it the first time and has another attempt to dislodge the bails. By that time, Fulmali drags her bat through the crease and reaches her destination safely.

  • 19.7

Short, around off, Richa Ghosh pulls it to deep square leg for one.

  • 19.6

FIVE WIDES! Free runs for India now. Mithali Ayodhya switches to around the wicket. Serving it much fuller, but down the leg side. Richa Ghosh misses on her flick, and it beats the keeper as well to race away for a boundary.

  • 19.5

SIX! HAMMERED AWAY! Pitches it up, closer to the off stump. Richa Ghosh walks across and powers it over deep mid-wicket for six more runs. India move to 205, and this is now the highest score in the history of Women's cricket in the Asian Games.

  • 19.4

On a nagging length, outside off, Richa Ghosh has a big heave across the line, but the ball catches the inside edge and the batter wears it on the pad.

  • 19.3

WIDE! Mithali Ayodhya sees the batter shuffle yet again, so she tries to keep it away from the batter's arc but ends up drifting beyond the tramline.

  • 19.2

SIX! BANG! On a back of a length, well outside off. Richa Ghosh shuffles across and swats it across, over the deep square leg for half a dozen.

  • 19.1

WIDE! Ayodhya pitches it much fuller, but sprays it away from the tramline outside off. Ghosh makes a leave at it.

  • 0.0

Time for the final over. Mithali Ayodhya will close out the innings. Can she prevent India from reaching 200?

  • 18.7

Short, wide outside off, Bharti Fulmali cuts it to cover. The batters could have pushed for a single but they decided against it.

  • 18.6

FOUR! SHOT! Just behind the full length, outside off. Bharti Fulmali loads her arm and hits it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.

  • 18.5

Kumari spills out a low full toss, outside off, Richa Ghosh skips down the track and carves it wide of deep point, where the fielder sprints and dives to her left to keep the batters down to a single.

  • 18.4

A touch fuller, around off, Bharti Fulmali drills it to long off for one.

  • 18.3

WIDE! On a nagging length, wide outside off, away from the tramline. Bharti Fulmali looks to punch it away but misses.

  • 18.2

Fuller in length, outside off, Richa Ghosh strides out and slices it uppishly. The ball drops well short of the deep cover fielder. Single taken.

  • 18.1

Much fuller, wide outside off, Bharti Fulmali slices it to the right of deep backward point for one.

  • 17.9

Keeps it away from the batter's hitting arc, on a back of a length. Fulmali chops it down to deep point for one.

  • 17.8

Around the tramline, on a length. Ghosh bunts it down to long off for a single.

  • 17.7

Wide. This is beyond the tramline on off. Ghosh makes the leave.

  • 17.6

SIX! Clean as a whistle. Kavindi gets her length wrong, as this is right in the slot, on off. Ghosh collapes her back knee and clobbers it away beyond the deep mid-wicket fence.

  • 17.5

FOUR! In the gap. Full in length, outside off. Ghosh knows that mid-wicket is up inside the circle. She drags it away past the diving mid-wicket fielder to her left. The long on fielder goes after it but cannot prevent the boundary.

  • 17.4

Wide. Beyond the tramline again, on a good length. Ghosh lets it go.

  • 17.3

Wide! That is a bit harsh. Kawya spots Ghosh make the move and she pushes it away from the batter. Ghosh fiddles at the ball and is beaten past the outside edge.

  • 17.2

FOUR! Untidy in the field. Fuller and on off. Ghosh reaches across and powers it away wide of long off. Kavisha Dilhari moves to her left and gets on her knees but lets it through and concedes a boundary.

Over and out - The ceremony comes to a close with one final photograph, as all three teams come together for the cameras. That draws the curtains on the women's cricket chapter at the 2026 Asian Games. Still to come is the men's competition, which will feature 10 teams and begin with the group stage. The action will get underway on Thursday, 24th September with a double-header. First up, Afghanistan take on Japan at 12 am GMT (5.30 am IST). Japan, who came ever so close to stunning the reigning T20I champions, India, in their historic clash, will be a team to watch out for. Later, at 5 am GMT (10.30 am IST), Hong Kong, China square off against Malaysia. As always, you can join us early for the build-up. See you then. Cheers!

India take the top prize - It is now time for India to step onto the podium and receive their gold medals. It is a second straight gold medal for Harmanpreet Kaur and her side at the Asian Games, but it is about taking that next step and doing better on the global stage, with the Champions Trophy scheduled to be played in India next year. Anyway, it is now time for the Indian national anthem to be played out.

Another silver for Sri Lanka - Next, Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka receive their silver medals, along with a memento. It is their second successive silver medal since the sport returned to the Asian Games. They would have hoped for a different colour this time around, but it was not to be. As always, though, Chamari will be proud of her side's efforts.

Pakistan back on the podium - First up, it will be Pakistan, the bronze medallists, who will receive their medals as well as a mascot figurine as a memento. Pakistan missed out on a medal at the previous edition but have made it onto the podium this time around. Earlier today, Fatima Sana's side came out on top against Bangladesh to secure the bronze medal.

The victorious Indian captain - Harmanpreet Kaur says the gold medal means a lot to them, and they spoke about the importance of maintaining their standards throughout the tournament. She adds that everyone who got an opportunity came up with a solid performance, which makes her very happy as a captain. Kaur says going unbeaten and going all the way was exactly what they expected of themselves. Harmanpreet praises the effort put into developing their pace unit, making special mention of Kranti's hard work and noticeable improvement. She concludes by praising the spin attack, reaffirming her complete confidence in their proven quality while singling out Sree Charani and Deepti Sharma for bowling exceptionally well across the tournament.

First up, it's Richa Ghosh - Richa says it is a really good feeling, adding that the journey started with a focus on winning the gold medal and making the country proud. When asked about the difference between winning a trophy and a medal, she says standing on the podium and singing the national anthem is a completely different feeling and that the two cannot be compared. On the celebrations, Ghosh says they do not like to plan anything in advance, with the focus always on winning the match. She adds that celebrations are certainly due for both the Asia Cup triumph and this gold medal.

Earlier in the game - After opting to bat first, the usual suspects were at it again as India posted 216, the highest total in women's cricket at the Asian Games. The opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma yet again came through for the team with a 99-run stand before Richa Ghosh provided the finishing touches with her blitzkrieg.

Sri Lanka never got going - The script from the Asia Cup repeated itself as Sri Lanka simply crumbled under the scoreboard pressure. Chamari Athapaththu's 29 was the highest score, with only two other batters managing to get into double digits. Apart from an early blemish in the field from Shreyanka Patil, India were tidy in the field, backing up the bowling effort. Spin did all the damage, with Deepti Sharma being the star of the show with figures of 3/6 from her 4 overs. This 147-run win is India's biggest in Women's T20I history.

Gold for India - The first gold medal for the Indian contingent at this year's Asian Games, and it has come courtesy of Harmanpreet Kaur's side. India have asserted their continental dominance in women's cricket, first with the Asia Cup title and now with the gold medal, following up on their gold-medal finish at the previous Asian Games. Sri Lanka were the second-best team on the day by a long way and will have to settle for the silver medal, with Pakistan clinching bronze.

They complete the single, but Ayodhya commits to a second without looking up, only to find her partner completely static at the non-striker's end.
